Gulf Islands National Seashore
The Gulf Islands National Seashore is a 150-mile stretch of barrier islands and coastal mainland. It is the most westerly of the coastlines and spans from Mississippi to Pensacola Beach.
The Gulf Islands National Seashore consists of thousands of acres of beaches, bayous, salt marsh, oak and magnolia forest, forts and other historic sites. With a variety of things to do you can explore either by yourself or on a guided tour.
The part of the Florida Panhandle has four 19th century forts build to defend Pensacola Bay. Fort Pickens is the largest, the others are Fort McRee, Fort Barrancas and Advanced Redoubt. They were built as part as a buttress to protect the major American harbors after the War of 1812.
